Taegeuk Il Jang (Poomsae 1)

Taegeuk Il Jang is the first pattern that you will learn in World Taekwondo.

In Korean

  • 'Il' translates as the number 1.
  • 'Jang' translates to 'Chapter'

 

Therefore, it translates as: Chapter 1.

The pattern is made up mostly of walking stances, but there are a few front stances which will allow you to practice transitioning between stances.

The pattern begins in Junbi Sogi.

1 Low block Walking stance Turn left
2 Middle Punch Walking stance Step forward
3 Low block Walking stance Turn around
4 Middle Punch Walking stance Step forward
5 Low block, punch Front stance Turn left
6 Inside block Walking stance Turn right
7 Middle punch Walking stance Step forward
8 Inside block Walking stance Turn around
9 Middle punch Walking stance Step forward
10 Low block, punch Front stance Turn right
11 High block Walking stance Turn left
12 & 13 Kick, middle punch Walking stance Step forward
14 High block Walking stance Turn around
15 & 16 Kick, middle punch Walking stance Step forward
17 Low block Front stance Turn right
18 Middle Punch Front stance Step forward

 

Turn 180 degrees to face the front and finish in Junbi Sogi on the same spot that you started.
