How to reset your Umbraco password via the database

So you forgot your Umbraco Password? Never mind, it happens to all of us.


There are a few ways to access & change your password:


  1. The latest versions of Umbraco have a forgot password link.
  2. If you have access to the database we can change it there.
  3. Install a dll, to reset the password for you.


Self explanatory. If you have the latest version of Umbraco click forgot password, insert your username and follow the instructions in the email.


If you have access to the database. Locate the UmbracoUser table and edit the column "userPassword". Set the value to


You can now login with your username and the new password is password. Don't forget to change your password as soon as you log in.


If you don't have access to the database or you have inherited a project without the usernames. You can download this useful .dll and place it in your bin folder. When you next run your project it will have reset the username and password to.

username: Admin
password: Admin1234!

...again, once logged in, change your username and password immediately.
